Antimag

The accuracy of watches is affected by magnetism. Therefore, after every service and cleaning, the mechanical movement should be demagnetised, either as a whole or whilst disassembled.

The balance spring in particular, especially in older movements, may have become magnetised over time. The spring can then no longer oscillate smoothly, causing the watch to run inaccurately. Tools can also pose a ‘risk’ by transmitting magnetism and should therefore be demagnetised before being used on watch movements.
